This Year’s Newly Michelin-Starred Eateries in Dubai

Five new eateries in Dubai have been awarded Michelin stars, joining the ranks of the most famous, respected and experimental restaurants in the world. These new recognitions bring the number of Michelin-starred establishments in Dubai to a grand total of nineteen, thus proving that the cosmopolitan city is truly a remarkable gastronomic destination.

The bestowed eateries include Smoked Room, Sagetsu by Tetsuya, La Dame de Pic Dubai, and Orfali Bros, who all received one Michelin star. Jason Atherton’s Row on 45 had the honour of receiving not only one, but two Michelin stars, joining Tresind Studio, Il Ristorante by Niko Romito and STAY by Yannick Alleno.

Smoked Room

Chef Dani Garcia brought his already popular restaurant, Smoked Room, from Madrid to Dubai just this year. The famed eatery specialises in what Garcia calls ‘Fire Omakase’, an immersive style of dining involving open fire and grills. His staff of top chefs guide diners through an 11-course menu, which features highly experimental dishes like sea-cucumber carbonara, and burnt pumpkin puree and mandarin sorbet.

Sagetsu by Tetsuya

Japanese-Australian Chef Tetsuya Wakuda already has two Michelin stars and a Sake Samurai title, so Sagetsu’s Michelin star ranking is merely another notch on his belt. He describes his cuisine as ‘where Japanese flavours harmonise with French culinary techniques’, or ‘traditional Japanese cuisine with a ‘Tetsuya’ twist’. Using only the finest ingredients from all over the world, Sagetsu’s menu celebrates the worlds of astronomy and gastronomy, in the way the moon governs the Japanese seasons, and, in turn, the way that the seasons govern Japanese cuisine.

La Dame de Pic

La Dame de Pic’s spot on this list will come as no surprise to the true foodies among you. French chef Anne-Sophie Pic is the most decorated female chef in the world, with 11 Michelin stars to her name, secured over her illustrious 30-year career. Her most famous, and trademarked, dish is Les Berlingots ASP: delicate green triangular pasta parcels, named after the similarly shaped French candies, filled with Blackmount goat’s cheese, and placed around a jewel-green heritage tomato.

Orfali Bros

Run by the three Orfali brothers – Head Chef Mohammad, and exceptional patissiers Wassim and Omar – from Aleppo, Orfali Bros has been praised as a genuinely unique, unpretentious dining experience. The culinary establishment has been awarded the title of ‘Best Restaurant in the MENA Region’ more than once. Following the mantra ‘Rules are meant to be bent and broken, with respect to our tradition’, the Orfali Bros menu is an eclectic mix of Syrian staples, European classics, pan-regional flavours and Asian ingredients.

Row on 45

British chef Jason Atherton’s Row on 45 is now one of four two-starred restaurants in Dubai, located inside Grosvenor House, a Luxury Collection Hotel. It, like Orfali Bros, landed on the ‘Best Restaurants in the MENA’ list just four months after its grand opening, and Atherton’s London restaurant, Pollen Street Social, earned a Michelin star within six months in 2011. Thus, perhaps it is no surprise that Row on 45 has so quickly earned two coveted Michelin stars.

The restaurant showcases Atherton’s signature brand of refined fine dining, which unfolds across 17 courses in three distinct ‘acts’: The Finest Welcome, The Pinnacle, and The Grand Finale. The service aims to take diners on a journey through Atherton’s personal evolution, while the soundtrack to his life plays in the background – notes from The Smiths, Johnny Cash, Tracy Chapman, Chuck Berry and more. The most notable dish is a pastry made from tuna bones, taking inspiration from Jack and the Beanstalk’s famous line: ‘I’ll grind your bones to make my bread.’

Other recognitions for Dubai in the Michelin Guide 2024 include the Service Award 2024, which went to Apichaya Khomson of DuangDy by BO.LAN; the Sommelier Award 2024, which went to Michael Mpofu of Celebrities by Mauro Colagreco; the Young Chef Award 2024, which went to Jesus Lobato Suarez of Smoked Room; and the Opening of the Year Award 2024, which went to The Guild.
