When MENA Stars Mastered the Smokey Eye

The smokey eye has long been more than a makeup choice in MENA pop culture. From Haifa Wehbe’s early-2000s Beirut press moment, wrapped in black leather and attitude, to Nancy Ajram’s poised gala performance at the Phoenicia, the look signaled presence, confidence, and control. Elissa softened it with bronzed tones and satin layers, while Fayrouz made it unmistakably hers on international stages, proving that restraint could be just as striking as intensity.

As the years moved on, the smokey eye followed MENA stars across cities and contexts. Najwa Karam amplified it with volume and shimmer in Dubai, Sherine Abdel Wahab paired it with feathers and a pixie cut on the Doha stage, and Nelly Karim closed the chapter with a sleek, modern red carpet take at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival. Different eras, different silhouettes, one beauty code that continues to anchor some of the region’s most memorable style moments.

Fayrouz | Concert at Bercy Palace, Paris (1988)

The blueprint. A classic smokey eye paired with a sequined headband, understated and iconic in the way only Fayrouz can be.

Haifa Wehbe | Press Meeting, Beirut (2002)

Wrapped head-to-toe in black, Haifa delivers peak dark femme. A leather corset, jet-black hair, and a deep smokey eye that does all the talking.

Najwa Karam | Dubai Shopping Festival, Dubai (2004)

Big blowout, sculpted smokey eyes with hints of purple and gold, and a simple black sequined dress that lets the makeup shine.

Sherine Abdel Wahab | Qatar Song Festival, Doha (2004)

A feathered collar, pink satin top, and pixie cut set the stage for a bold smokey eye that balances softness with attitude.

Elissa | Le Salon du Mariage, Beirut (2006)

Bronzed smokey eyes meet soft blowout curls. A scarf at the neck, light blue satin, and a black blazer keep it polished but effortless.

Nancy Ajram | Charity Gala, Beirut (2007)

Hair slicked into a neat low bun, mic in hand, and a clean black strap dress. The smokey eye sharpens the look without overpowering it.

Nelly Karim | Doha Tribeca Film Festival, Doha (2012)

Sleek, straight hair, a sharp black dress, and a chunky statement necklace. The smokey eye ties it all together with confidence.
