1,300 Year Old Al-Safa Mosque is Undergoing Renovations

Built 1,300 years ago in Al-Baha, the Al-Safa Mosque is undergoing renovations as part of the second phase of Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman’s Development of Historical Mosques project.

The project was launched in 2018 to safeguard the heritage of the kingdom by refurbishing 130 mosques across Saudi Arabia. At its prime, Al-Safa Mosque used to be a social hub for villagers. Within its Sarat style architecture, which was built with stones from the Sarawat mountains, Al-Safat Mosque holds great religious and historical value to its residents.

The Al-Safa Mosque is supported by two juniper trees adorned by ancient inscriptions which will be developed during the renovations.

The second phase of the Development of Historical Mosques project is being carried out in mosques across 13 different regions by Saudi companies specialised in renovating heritage buildings.
