Egypt’s Streetlights to Be Replaced With Energy-Efficient Bulbs

Egypt’s street lights are getting a makeover. But before you get giddy imagining yourself swinging to sophisticated streetlamps like it’s Midnight In Paris, we’re only talking about the light bulbs themselves.

The Ministry of Local Development will be replacing the bulbs of a total of 4.2 million street lights with energy-efficient ones in order to cut the costs of the electricity bill and reduce total energy consumption. The project is already in full swing, with 2.7 million installed and another 1.5 million to light up the night.

We can consider them Smart Bulbs, because their integration within a central digital network will see them switch on and off according to the hours of sunrise and sunset throughout the year. They’re smart with money too, and are expected to save EGP 11.1 billion.

With capacities of 100-120 watts, the bulbs will be installed across the country's governorates, notably with 225,000 in Qena and 184,000 in Cairo.
