Monochrome Monday: Espresso
This week’s edit explores dark brown at its most polished, where leather, wool and embellishment give Espresso its depth.
There was a time when dark brown came with rules. It belonged to leather goods, sensible shoes, perhaps a coat, but rarely occupied the same fashion territory as black. That distinction has all but disappeared. Espresso is brown pushed to its deepest register, dark enough to carry the authority of black but warmer, and often more interesting once texture enters the equation.
Double A gives Espresso the natural sheen of leather, while Arakii builds it into the structure of wool. Wrdrobe and For the Bold & Refined take the shade onto the body, Katee by Kristina brings it back to the classic brown shoe, and Jude Ben Halim and Vanina prove that dark brown can hold its own well beyond clothing. What emerges is less a seasonal alternative to black than a wardrobe language of its own.
Double A | Double A X LJ Garrison Brown Leather Top
Brown leather usually arrives as a jacket. Double A and Lara Jabara cut it much closer to the body, turning sheep leather into a halter top with a high neckline, open back and fringed hem. The result makes Espresso feel less heritage and considerably more provocative.
Jude Ben Halim | Horizon Necklace
Jewellery breaks up a monochrome palette without breaking the mood. Against Espresso, the Horizon Necklace introduces shine and dimension, giving all that dark brown somewhere for the eye to land.
Arakii | Wool Peplum Jacket
A peplum changes the language of brown tailoring. Arakii pulls wool in at the waist before letting it flare out, replacing the straight lines we expect from a dark jacket with a more sculpted silhouette.
Wrdrobe | Shams Halter Top
The Shams Halter strips Espresso back to the body. With the shoulders exposed and the colour kept deep, Wrdrobe shows how brown can feel sensual without relying on the obviousness of black.
Katee by Kristina | Baila Brown Flats
If there is one place brown has never needed defending, it is footwear. The Baila Flats revisit that familiarity through the ballet flat, making Espresso feel less traditional and more in step with fashion’s continuing appetite for low-profile shoes.
For the Bold & Refined | Golden Hour Dress
Espresso is particularly good at changing with the light. On the Golden Hour Dress, dark brown moves away from its daytime associations and into evening territory, where its warmth offers a softer counterpoint to the inevitable black dress.
Vanina World | Léo Bucket
Vanina takes Espresso somewhere unexpected: into a beaded bucket bag. The decorative construction plays against brown’s reputation for practicality, proving the shade can carry ornament just as convincingly as it carries leather.
