595 New Bus Shelters Have Been Installed Across Dubai
The shelters include air conditioned waiting areas, digital information screens and full accessibility under the Dubai Universal Design Code.
The Roads and Transport Authority has installed 595 new public bus passenger shelters across key locations in Dubai, bringing the 762 shelter programme to about 89% completion. The upgrade forms part of an ongoing modernisation of street level public transport infrastructure that serves more than 192 million passengers annually. The locations were selected based on future demand, high population density and integration with other soft mobility options. Several stops function as major hubs, with some shelters serving more than 10 bus routes. To align amenity levels with use, the authority classifies shelters into four tiers by daily passenger volume: primary shelters for more than 750 passengers, secondary for 250 to 750, basic for 100 to 250, and boarding and alighting stops for fewer than 100. Primary shelters include air conditioned indoor waiting areas, shaded outdoor seating and digital information screens that display live route maps, bus schedules, headways and passenger updates. The shelter designs also provide designated advertising zones. As part of delivery, the authority is trialling 3D printing for the construction of some shelters on a pilot basis. All new shelters are fully compliant with the Dubai Universal Design Code and include dedicated spaces for wheelchair users, supporting the My Community A City for Everyone initiative led by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. The authority states the overall target is to complete 762 shelters by the end of 2025.
