Burj Khalifa Metro Station Set to Handle 220,000 Passengers Daily

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in collaboration with Emaar Properties, has announced a major expansion of the Burj Khalifa–Dubai Mall Metro Station to meet growing passenger demand. The project will increase the station’s footprint from 6,700 sqm to 8,500 sqm and raise hourly capacity from 7,250 to 12,320 passengers - an increase of 65%.

Once complete, the station will be able to accommodate up to 220,000 passengers daily. This upgrade is part of long-range planning to handle surges during New Year’s Eve, public holidays, national events, and peak visitor seasons.

The station’s average annual ridership has grown consistently, rising from 6.13 million in 2013 to over 10.5 million in 2024, equating to nearly 58,000 boardings and alightings per day.

The expansion includes new entrances and pedestrian bridges, enlarged concourses and platforms, additional escalators and elevators, and separate entry and exit gates. Fare barriers will be increased to optimise flow, with added retail space to generate additional revenue. Enhanced integration with buses, bicycles, e‑scooters, and pedestrian routes is also planned.

Designers are drawing on the seashell motif used across Dubai Metro’s Red and Green Lines, with focus on interior flow, simplicity, and reduced walking distances. Inclusive features for people of determination, senior citizens, and parents with strollers are also being incorporated.
