Cabinet Approves Construction of 500 Megawatt Gulf of Suez Wind Farm
The plans will see the wind farm under a Build-Own-Operate contract with Siemens Gamesa.
The Council of Ministers has approved plans for the construction and development of a 500 megawatt (MW) offshore wind farm in the Gulf of Suez. Plans for the Red Sea wind power plant are for a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) contract with Siemens Gamesa, a leading Spanish-German wind engineering company.
Harnessing the power of wind is part of the government’s approach to sustainable development, a keystone in Egypt’s Vision 2030. Several onshore and offshore wind farms already exist in Egypt, such as the 220 MW Gulf of El Zayt project.
In August 2023, plans were announced for a new 760 MW wind farm in Sohag, with the contract awarded to an international consortium of companies led by Egyptian construction giant Orascom.
