Cairo to Host First Official G20 Meeting Outside Member States

An official G20 meeting will be held in Egypt for the first time from September 1st to 3rd, 2025, according to Ambassador Ragy El-Etreby, the President’s Personal Representative to the G20 and Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs. Ambassador El-Etreby confirmed that the meeting will take place in Cairo and highlighted that this marks the first time an official G20 gathering has been held outside the group’s member states since its establishment in 1999. He added that the meeting reflects Egypt’s participation as a guest country in this year’s G20 proceedings under South Africa’s presidency. Egypt has taken part in the G20 as a guest country for three consecutive years and five times in total. The meeting, organised in coordination with the South African G20 presidency, will focus on food security and its multiple challenges. It is expected to bring together representatives from G20 member states, guest countries invited by South Africa, international organisations, and financial institutions. Key topics will include the outcomes of the G20 Food Security Working Group and negotiations related to the Ministerial Statement on Global Food Security. The statement is scheduled for adoption during the G20 Ministerial Meeting in South Africa on September 19th, 2025, and will be included in the official documents for the G20 Summit in Johannesburg on November 22nd–23rd, 2025.
