Driver Accused in Habiba El Shamaa Case Gets Reduced Sentence
The court ruled to reduce the Uber driver’s sentence to five years of imprisonment, and fined him EGP 10,000.

Egypt's criminal court has reduced the prison sentence for the Uber driver involved in the death of Habiba El Shammaa, widely referred to as the ‘Shorouk Girl’.
Originally sentenced to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment, the driver’s sentence has now been reduced to five years following an appeal. In addition to the reduced sentence, the court imposed a fine of EGP 10,000 and acquitted the driver of the kidnapping charge.
In March 2024, Habiba El Shamaa had sustained fatal injuries after jumping from the car on Suez Road. Medical reports indicate she died from cardiac arrest caused by a lack of blood circulation.
