Egypt Becomes First in Region to Meet WHO Target on Hepatitis B
Egypt is the first Eastern Mediterranean country to reduce hepatitis B prevalence below 1% among children aged five and older.

Egypt has officially become the first country in the Eastern Mediterranean region to meet the World Health Organization’s target for controlling hepatitis B, according to a recent review by the WHO Regional Committee. The milestone confirms that hepatitis B prevalence among children aged five and above in Egypt has dropped below 1%, meeting the benchmark for regional control.
This achievement follows years of consistent immunisation efforts. National vaccination coverage has remained above 90% for both the hepatitis B birth dose and the third dose for over a decade—one of the highest sustained rates in the region.
