Egypt Officially Scores the Right to Host the 2027 African Games
This win was announced alongside the opening of this year’s games in Ghana.
Egyptian sports teams have something new to cheer about – The Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) has officially announced that Egypt will be the host of the 2027 African Games. The announcement came on the second day of the 2024 African Games, which is held in Ghana from March 8th to the 23rd.
The African Games are the continent’s largest sports competition, and are held once every four years in a different country. Egypt’s achievement in securing their spot as the games’ host comes after having successfully hosted several other successful events, such as the 2021 World Handball Cup, the 2006 and 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, and the 2022 U20 African Nations Cup.
Securing their bid to host the 2027 games was not Egypt’s only achievement in Ghana this weekend. The country has started the African Games strong with the Egyptian Pharaohs winning the Mixed Team Rapid Championship, a 6-round chess tournament featuring teams of men and women. Egypt’s winning team consisted of Bassem Amin and Shahenda Wafa.
The 2027 event will be the first time since 1991 that the country will host the African Games, and the second time in Egypt’s history.
