Egypt Retains Rank as Africa’s Second-Largest Economy in 2025
IMF projects Egypt’s GDP growth at 3.8% for FY2024/25, trailing South Africa’s USD 410 billion economy.

Egypt is projected to hold its position as Africa’s second-largest economy in 2025, according to an International Monetary Fund (IMF) report, with an estimated GDP growth of 3.8% for the 2024/25 financial year- up from 2.4% in FY2023/24. South Africa retains the top spot with a GDP of USD 410.34 billion, while Nigeria, once the continent’s largest economy, falls to fourth-place (USD 188.27 billion GDP) despite its population size.
The IMF highlighted improved economic prospects for Egypt, forecasting growth to rise to 4.3% in FY2025/26. The report noted Africa’s “diverse economic landscape”, with some nations driving regional GDP contributions and others facing challenges such as political instability or infrastructure gaps.
