First Real-Time Noise Monitoring Station Activated in Suez

A real-time noise monitoring station has been activated in Suez as part of a nationwide network designed to track and analyse noise pollution in densely populated areas.

According to Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment Dr Manal Awad, the unit has been installed at the Faisal district headquarters building, completing coverage across the canal cities following earlier installations in Ismailia and Port Said.

The network consists of 44 stations distributed across the country to provide continuous, real-time readings that can support environmental planning and policy development. Dr Awad said the monitoring system relies on updated scientific techniques for sampling and data analysis, allowing authorities to assess noise levels with greater accuracy and identify areas requiring intervention.

Suez was selected due to its strategic location and population density, making it a key site for measuring urban noise exposure. She also referred to ongoing environmental monitoring of coastal waters along the Mediterranean and Red Sea, as well as the Gulfs of Suez and Aqaba and Egypt’s lakes.

These programmes, implemented since 1998 in cooperation with Alexandria University’s Institute of Graduate Studies and the National Institute of Marine Sciences, contribute to a national environmental database.

The coastal monitoring system tracks indicators including dissolved oxygen, salinity and nutrient levels, supporting early detection of pollutants and assessment of environmental pressures linked to human and developmental activity.
