Government Monitors Depictions of Smoking & Drug Use in Ramadan Series
Scenes including smoking or drug use are subject to strict moral guidelines in order to combat the spread of addiction.
The Ministry of Social Solidarity continues to monitor and analyse depictions of smoking and drug use in Ramadan television series through the Fund for Combating and Treating Addiction and Abuse. The fund brings together a group of media, psychiatry and sociology professors who are charged with assessing scenes that include smoking or drug use, ascertaining whether they are within agreed parameters and are not creating images that glorify addiction or abuse.
Minister of Social Solidarity Nevin Al Qabbaj made clear the ministry’s commitment to continue open dialogue between the fund and media production companies, in order to maintain the creation of dramas within agreed-upon moral guidelines, particularly during a month where more TV is watched than any other.
