Handling of Radioactive Materials Tightened Under New Amendments

New controls governing the import, export and transport of radioactive materials have been approved following amendments passed by Egypt’s House of Representatives.

The amendments to Article 55 of a draft law revising provisions of Law No. 7 of 2010 were approved during a plenary session on March 29th, 2026, chaired by Hisham Badawi.

Under the updated provisions, the import, customs clearance, export or transport of any radioactive materials, sources or components is prohibited without prior approval from the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority and in accordance with its established standards. X-ray machines used in the medical field are exempt from the new requirement.

According to the parliamentary committee’s report, the amendments are intended to strengthen the legislative framework regulating nuclear and radioactive activities and enhance the authority’s operational efficiency.

The updates also introduce a more precise definition of radioactive facilities and revise the fee structure for licences, permits and approvals, aligning with economic changes while remaining consistent with constitutional provisions.

The changes follow a review of existing legislation, with the committee citing the need to address gaps identified through practical implementation.
