Ithra Unveils Historic Islamic Treasures at Jeddah’s Arts Biennale

Historic Islamic artifacts are now on display at the second edition of the Islamic Arts Biennale in Jeddah, organised by the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra). The biennale, which runs until May 25th at the Western Hajj Terminal, explores the ways faith is experienced, expressed and celebrated through the theme ‘And All That Is In Between’.

Among the key artifacts displayed is a historic edict from Ottoman Sultan Mustafa III (1757–1774) regarding the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) tomb, a prayer carpet fragment, and a manuscript of tafsir (interpretation of the Qur'an). Other notable items include a folding manuscript stand, a mosque lamp and a large wooden minbar (pulpit).

The curated pieces, developed in collaboration with Heather Ecker and Marika Sardar, reflect the Islamic concept of waqf - the dedication of assets for communal benefit, particularly in religious, educational and charitable contexts.

Ithra’s participation is part of its broader mission to inspire and enrich through cultural exchanges, showcased through events like the triennial Islamic Art Conference and major exhibitions, including its current ‘In Praise of the Artisan’ exhibit. This ongoing exhibition features over 130 works of historic and contemporary Islamic art, many on public display for the first time.

The biennale, hosted by the Diriyah Biennale Foundation, has grown into an important platform for celebrating Islamic art and traditions, attracting more than 600,000 visitors at its inaugural event in 2023.
