Saudi Arabia Ranks Third Globally in Living Organ Donation in 2024

Saudi Arabia ranks third worldwide in the Global Observatory on Donation and Transplantation’s (GODT) index for living organ donation in 2024.

According to data from the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation, the country recorded 1,706 living donor transplants last year, including 1,284 kidney transplants and 422 partial liver transplants. Additionally, deceased donor transplants rose by 12.3%, with 393 organs transplanted from deceased donors during the same period.

As part of its efforts to enhance organ donation infrastructure, Saudi Arabia launched the digital platform Athar during the Saudi Organ Transplantation Conference. The platform aims to streamline donation and transplant processes, improve donor-recipient matching using AI technologies, and enhance coordination across healthcare institutions.

The total number of individuals registered to donate their organs after death has reached approximately 540,000, reflecting growing societal awareness about the importance of organ donation and its role in saving lives.

The Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation currently oversees 30 accredited organ transplant programs across the Kingdom and continues to expand its community outreach and donor education initiatives.
