Saudi Arabia Sees Decline in Food Waste Levels in 2025
The authority reported average annual per capita food loss and waste at 155 kilograms split into 67.2 kilograms loss and 87.8 kilograms waste.
Saudi Arabia recorded a decline in food waste and food loss levels in 2025, according to figures released by the General Food Security Authority. The authority said the food waste index fell to 15.8% in 2025, down from 18.9% in 2019, while the food loss index declined to 12.1% compared to 14.2% over the same period.
The authority reported that the average annual per capita share of food loss and waste stands at around 155 kilograms. This total includes approximately 67.2 kilograms attributed to food loss and 87.8 kilograms to food waste. Officials said the figures indicate the positive impact of ongoing corrective policies and improved efficiency in managing food resources.
According to the authority, the decline reflects better handling practices across multiple stages of the food supply chain, including harvesting, storage, transportation, distribution, and consumption. Improvements at these stages have helped reduce losses before food reaches consumers, while also limiting waste at the household and retail levels.
