Tenants Under Old Rent System Can Now Apply for Alternative Units
The platform enables tenants to submit their applications digitally as part of state efforts to support those in long-standing subsidised rent contracts.

Registration has officially begun for renters covered by Egypt’s old-rent law to apply for alternative housing units. The Digital Egypt platform, run in coordination with the Ministry of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, enables tenants to submit their applications digitally as part of state efforts to support those in long-standing subsidised rent contracts. Tenants must log in via the dedicated digital.gov.eg service, complete required forms, and upload relevant documents. The application period is time-bound, and late submissions may not be accepted. Authorities will assess applications based on eligibility criteria tied to the old-rent framework. Application submissions will open in the second week of October and remain available for three months. The move is part of a broader reform initiative to transition subsidies and support towards better housing solutions while maintaining protection for vulnerable tenant groups. Officials emphasise that the process is transparent and aims to ensure fair distribution of replacement units.
