S/ice by Nutcracker Brings a Cozy Winter Cabin to New Cairo
Chunky cookies, stuffed focaccia, and cinnamon buns fill every shelf of this new U Venues bakery, where even the coffee has its own ritual and the silver holiday tins are full of goodies.
S/ice by Nutcracker - the hotly-anticipated expansion to beloved sweet shop, Nutcracker - looks like a wintery cabin in the woods on the ground floor of U Venues Mall in New Cairo. The facade of smooth mahogany wood doubles as a wall of display windows, with a cubby for each sweet and savory treat. Each item is written clearly in white marker, so you can narrow down your pick easily—or perhaps buy the whole wall—from crispy Roman-style pizza and stuffed focaccia sandwiches to gooey cinnamon buns, chunky cookies, rich cakes, and elegant gâteaux.
This new cafe and bakery began as a small family passion project in their kitchen, and has since grown into “a full-blown dessert haven,” co-founder Engie Mansour said, “thanks to a whole lot of love, late nights, and nut flour.”
And that is their key ingredient—all S/lice desserts are made specifically with nut flours for a sugary crunch. They also import products that give their baked goods an authentic taste, like French butter and Belgian chocolates, and customers can taste the difference, Mansour said.
Every morning, the process starts like this: “We wake up, grind and roast our nuts for our nut flours, set the tables, shape our dough, add its toppings and heat the oven, assemble our sandwiches and start the baking,” Mansour said. But before anything else, Mansour brews a steaming flat white from their new coffee label, Slowhaus.
Paired with a macaroon, Dubai chocolate, or Christmas tree cookie from one of their silver tin boxes, the holiday vibes are in full swing.
Mansour said that we should leave thinking: “I need to come back—and bring someone with me.”
