Foster + Partners Unveil Design for Bilaj Al Jazayer Beach in Bahrain
Brimming with local trees, the 3.5-kilometre beachfront development fosters pedestrian comfort and sustainable living.
London-based architectural firm Foster + Partners revealed their proposed masterplan for a new beachfront development, Bilaj Al Jazayer Beach, along Bahrain's southwest coast, introducing a three and a half kilometre pedestrian-friendly waterfront path.
Structured around three main corridors, the masterplan is designed to encourage walking and cycling. These include Beach Drive along the shoreline, Main Boulevard running parallel and set back, and Bilaj Al Jazayer Avenue, which links the two. Each is lined with local trees and includes dedicated pedestrian paths and bike lanes.
The beachside buildings are crafted with a focus on human scale, offering a harmonious and tranquil experience while maintaining clear, sweeping views of the sea. At ground level, a blend of shops, cafes, and dining options infuses the area with energy, creating a lively, dynamic streetscape.
One of the district’s standout features is a public surf park, utilising wave-generating technology to bring ocean-like conditions inland. A sprawling green park serves as a buffer, offering a serene escape between the beachfront and the main road. As you walk along the beach, a series of piers extend into the sea, guiding you into protected coves where the rhythmic sound of waves and the scent of saltwater create a soothing atmosphere.
At the heart of the development stand two hotels serving as key landmarks. Between these iconic structures, residential neighbourhoods emerge, reflecting Bahrain’s traditional passive architecture.
Featuring stepped terraces with raised pools that flow into lush green vistas, these homes seamlessly integrate with their surroundings. Sustainable design elements, such as shaded courtyards and winding alleyways, reduce heat exposure, ensuring a comfortable, energy-efficient environment. Floating ceilings with graceful corners enhance the sense of openness, creating a harmonious blend of modern architecture and nature.
Developed for Edamah, a leading real estate investment and development company in Bahrain, the Bilaj Al Jazayer Beach masterplan supports the government’s ongoing efforts to improve the urban landscape and promote sustainable growth.
