Saudi’s Misk Foundation Earns WELL Gold for Its Headquarters’ Design
Designed by Australian firm Conrad Gargett, the HQ’s innovative design fosters well-being and engagement with nature in Riyadh.
The headquarters of the Mohammed bin Salman Foundation (Misk Foundation) has earned the WELL Gold certification for its innovative urban design. Designed by Australian firm Conrad Gargett, the building’s delivery is led by Brewer Smith Brewer Group (BSBG), an award-winning firm specialising in executive architecture and structural engineering with offices in Dubai, London and Riyadh.
The WELL certification, granted by the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), recognises buildings that promote health and well-being through design, encouraging organisations to create environments that prioritise human comfort and health.
Situated in Riyadh’s Irqah neighbourhood, the headquarters is part of Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Nonprofit City. Spanning 3.4 square kilometres, the city is designed to empower youth, foster innovation and promote entrepreneurship.
Reflecting the Kingdom’s vision to increase green space per capita, the design of the foundation revolves around the ‘Green Court’. This central landscaped area, designed to be a vibrant hub, featuring amenities such as cafes, restaurants and exhibition spaces, is sheltered by a vast mashrabiya-inspired ceiling.
This trellis like roofing system allows for the sunlight to filter through gently, creating a comfortable place of connection. Meanwhile the headquarters’ exterior façade references traditional architecture by creating a play of light and shade on its tessellated surface.
The IWBI certificate evaluates several factors in urban and building design, including air quality, water purity, lighting, temperature regulation, insulation, connection to nature and movement flow. These elements are thoughtfully incorporated into the headquarters’design, ensuring the building fosters a healthy and supportive work environment where the foundation’s team can engage with nature.
