Begad Enters New Chapter with New EP ‘Low L!fe’
Despite its flaws, ‘Low L!fe [Part 1]’ marks a new beginning for Begad Osama.
Cairo-based rapper and singer Begad Osama has kicked off the new year with his latest project, ‘Low L!fe [Part 1]’, the first instalment of what promises to be an extended long play. The four-track EP finds Begad sticking to familiar territory on most tracks while venturing into experimental sounds at times.
In 2024, Begad released a full-length EP that departed from traditional hip-hop, leaning into melodic, emotional reflections on his ‘L!fe’. That project showcased his personal writing style as he explored themes of belonging, family and his neighbourhood. ‘Low L!fe [Part 1]’ continues to touch on these topics, such as in the intro track, ‘ElSO7BGYA’, featuring UMI. However, Begad also shifts towards themes of ambition and bravado, particularly in the standout track, ‘SO2 SODA’.
On ‘SO2 SODA’, Begad tackles an unconventional beat that sits somewhere between trap and drill, featuring quirky ad-libs that weave in and out of the stereo. His precise bars and commanding flow make it one of the EP’s high points. Meanwhile, ‘RAY7 GAI’ leans into more familiar sonic elements, incorporating tabla beats and minimal production that allow Begad’s vocals to shine.
The EP wraps up with ‘ENTA EL 7ALA GATLK WLA EH’, which, unfortunately, may be the weakest track. Begad’s performance feels overworked, with an exaggerated flow and a repetitive hook that detracts from the track’s potential. Despite its flaws, ‘Low L!fe [Part 1]’ marks a new chapter for Begad Osama, offering a glimpse into his evolving artistry and what might follow in the upcoming sequels.
