Egypt to Launch World's Biggest Wastewater Treatment Plant in 2021

Water scarcity is one of the biggest issues facing the world today, so much so that it has been listed by the World Economic Forum in 2019 as one of the largest global risks in terms of potential detrimental impact over the next decade, and solving the issue is one of the UN’s main millennium development goals. And with that issue nipping at Egypt's heels, it's little wonder that they're looking to host the world’s biggest wastewater treatment plant soon.

The plant has an estimated cost of EGP 18 billion, and is to be connected to the longest drain in Bahr El-Bakar, which spans 106KM in length. The plant will be built in the Bahr El-Bakar area in Sharqia, so that it can treat the area's agricultural wastewater.

This ambitious project is expected to conclude in only 8 months, and is hoped to significantly facilitate millions of Egyptians' access to clean water.
