Abu Dhabi Records 97.4% in Sustainable Fisheries Index
The Environment Agency’s updated figures reflect major progress in fish stock recovery and marine conservation policies.

The Environment Agency in Abu Dhabi (EAD) has reported a rise in the Sustainable Fisheries Index, reaching 97.4% in 2024, up from 8.9% in 2018.
Recent monitoring by EAD also documented the presence of rare fish species, including the white-spotted grouper and Nuaimi fish, highlighting improved marine biodiversity. These findings underscore the effects of Abu Dhabi’s policies, which regulate commercial and recreational fishing, establish marine reserves, and promote sustainable aquaculture through initiatives like the Abu Dhabi Coral Gardens.
Since 2019, Abu Dhabi has been implementing a National Framework for Sustainable Fisheries across the UAE, aiming for full implementation by 2030. The framework focuses on restoring fish stocks, reducing overfishing, and enhancing marine habitats.
