CAPMAS Reports 24.5% Decrease in Road Accident Fatalities in 2023
The number of road accident fatalities in 2023 was 5861 as compared to 2022’s 7762, marking a 24.5% decrease.
A recent report by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) reveals that the number of road accident fatalities in Egypt declined to 5,861 in 2023 from 7,762 in 2022, a 24.5% decrease. The severity rate of road accidents, measured by deaths per 100 injuries, fell to 8.3 from 13.9 in 2022, marking a 40.3% decrease. Similarly, the fatality rate per 100,000 people dropped by 25.3%, from 7.5 to 5.6.
Despite these improvements, the number of road accident injuries surged by 27%, with 71,016 injuries in 2023 compared to 55,991 in 2022. The injury rate per 100,000 people increased by 25%, rising from 54.0 to 67.5.
Cairo governorate recorded the highest fatalities at 718, while North Sinai had the fewest at 18. The Daqahliyah governorate led in injuries with 14,192, whereas Ismailia had the lowest at 170.
January and April were the deadliest months, each with 540 deaths, while December saw the fewest fatalities (431). October experienced the highest number of injuries (6,723), and February the least (4,690).
Males were disproportionately affected, accounting for 4,902 fatalities and 57,198 injuries, compared to 959 female fatalities and 13,531 injuries. The highest fatalities by age were among those under 15, with 1,409 deaths, while the most injuries occurred in the same age group, totaling 21,151.
Pedestrians suffered the most fatalities at 2,199, followed by drivers at 1,442. Passengers recorded the highest number of injuries at 22,454, with pedestrians next at 17,553.
