Dar Al-Ifta Approves AI Monitoring at Work Under Conditions
The ruling allows AI oversight of employees if limited to work and applied transparently.
Dar Al-Ifta has stated that the use of artificial intelligence to monitor employee performance in the workplace is permissible in principle, provided it is applied within a regulated framework that serves both institutional and public interests.
The guidance covers uses such as tracking attendance, overseeing task completion, protecting company data and safeguarding customer interests, as long as the tools remain strictly within the scope of professional activity.
Dar Al-Ifta outlined conditions for implementation, including the requirement to notify employees in advance about the presence of monitoring systems to ensure transparency and awareness of workplace policies.
It also specified that the use of such technologies must be limited to job-related needs and should not extend into employees’ private lives or be used to monitor behaviour outside working hours.
The institution stated that monitoring beyond the workplace or accessing personal data unrelated to professional duties is prohibited, emphasising that such practices violate established principles protecting privacy and dignity.
