Expansion of Medical Facilities Treating Newborns' Genetic Disorders

The Ministry of Health and Population announced the expansion of free healthcare services to diagnose and treat newborn children with genetic disorders at 42 university hospitals and research centres, in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the Supreme Council of University Hospitals.

The expansion is part of the nationwide initiative, ‘100 Million Healthy Lives’, which looks to revamp healthcare services in Egypt. The initiative has so far provided 203,000 children with free checkups and treatment services since its inception.

The first phase of the project entailed diagnosing newborns with 19 different genetic disorders including cystic fibrosis, folic anaemia and adrenal hyperplasia, while the second phase is set to provide all newborns in Egypt with routine checkups for genetic conditions.
