Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sets Up Unit to Help Egyptians in Congo
The Egyptian embassy in Kinshasa has advised Egyptians to avoid conflict zones and is in contact with those needing assistance.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has established an operations room to track the safety of Egyptian citizens in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, as violence escalates in the region. The government went on to call for an end to the fighting and stressed the importance of respecting the DRC’s sovereignty.
The violence in the DRC escalated when M23 rebels took control of Goma, which then led the DRC to sever its ties with Rwanda. The city has since been under siege due to clashes between rebel forces and government troops. In response, the Egyptian embassy in Kinshasa has urged Egyptians to avoid conflict zones, and is said to be actively maintaining contact with citizens who require assistance
