Presidential Campaign to Plant 100 Million Trees in Egypt by 2030
A new presidential initiative called ‘100 Million Trees’ will focus on extensively planting trees on highways and increasing greenery within urban communities and in public spaces.
In light of the COP27 UN Climate Change Conference coming to Sharm El Sheikh this November, the Egyptian government is prioritising Egypt’s climate change file, according to Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli. A new presidential initiative called ‘100 Million Trees’ will focus on extensively planting trees on highways and increasing greenery within urban communities and in public spaces.
The cabinet meeting also discussed an upcoming plan of regulations to organise the process of planting within newly developed roads, and legislation to regulate suitable types of trees according to road conditions. According to Mahmoud Shaarawy, the Minister of Local Development, the initiative has named 9,900 sites for planting nationwide, with an overall area of 6,600 acres.
The ‘100 Million Trees’ initiative is a collaboration between governmental institutions, ministries, and the cabinet, including the Ministry of Environment in light of their efforts with the Haya Karima initiative to plant an additional one million trees annually in Egypt’s highly polluted areas, as well as within youth centres, schools, and universities.
These efforts are part of a nationwide goal to decrease pollution rates by 50% in 2030.
