Street Photographer Suhail Nassar Captures Life & Loss in Gaza
Amidst occupation and warfare, this Gaza-based street photographer has been documenting urban life in one of the most densely populated cities in the world.
Suhail Nassar, a Gaza-based street photographer, has been documenting urban life in the city over the past couple of years. Home to over two million people, Gaza is one of the most densely-populated cities in the world. Yet with the population of Gaza living under occupation by Israel, the vibrancy of everyday life often gives way to the desolation of destruction as its buildings are carpet bombed and its populace killed.
By necessity, most of Gaza’s residential buildings are high-rises due to limited space, with less than 365 square kilometres of land. According to the United Nations, 9,290 housing units have become uninhabitable - and that number is only going to rise. Amongst the many war crimes committed against Gaza is the destruction of seven mosques, which Nassar captures frequently across his photographs.
Through Nassar’s lens, he manages to chronicle the catastrophes that befall Gaza, as well as the fleeting moments of peace in between them that are so rarely shared.
