New 'Green Hurghada' Project Attracts Over USD 3 Million Investment
Egypt and UNIDO are collaborating to combat climate change and environmental degradation in one of Egypt’s tourist hubs.
The Ministry of Environment and the UN Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) have entered into a USD 3 million agreement to combat greenhouse gas emissions and protect biodiversity in Hurghada City. The funding for this project comes from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), an international fund that supports biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation.
This initiative, known as ‘Green Hurghada’, will take several steps in the next five years to make Hurghada a more environmentally-friendly place. Some of these steps include promoting green investments in Hurghada’s tourism sector and raising awareness about the importance of preserving biodiversity. The project will also introduce climate-smart technology and conservation practices into the infrastructure of the city’s tourism, energy and transport sectors.
Ultimately, the goal of this project is to develop a more resilient tourism industry while prioritising environmental, economic, and social sustainability. Egypt’s larger vision for sustainability includes implementing a similar program in Sharm El-Sheikh, with the intention of turning the tourist hub into a green city by 2028.
