Start Ramadan 2024 With This View Inside Cairo Citadel

With the holy month of Ramadan commencing, we couldn’t think of a view more reflective of Egypt’s rich Islamic heritage. Among the countless vistas Cairo has to offer, here’s one from within one of the Cairo Citadel towers overlooking the historic mosques of Sultan al-Nasir Muhammed and Muhammed Ali Pasha.

Built almost 500 years apart, the two neighbouring mosques mark different chapters of Cairo’s history. Sultan al-Nasir Muhammed Ibn Qalawun’s 14th century mosque was built for Mamluk sultans. The Mosque of Muhammed Ali, meanwhile, was built in the 19th century in the memory of Tusun Pasha, one of Muhammed Ali’s sons.

Deferring in architectural styles and symbolic detailing, the mosques are joined by another pair of historically significant mosques within the citadel walls; Al-Azab Mosque which rests behind the Bab Al-Azab gates and the recently restored mosque of Suleiyman Pasha, the oldest Ottoman site in Cairo.
