Abu Dhabi Schools to Implement Mandatory PE With Structured Curriculum

Abu Dhabi schools will now be required to implement a structured Physical Education (PE) curriculum under new regulations introduced by the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK). The policy mandates that all schools follow a written curriculum led by qualified PE teachers, ensuring that students receive consistent and well-structured physical education.

Previously, PE requirements varied across different curricula, with qualifications for PE teachers left unregulated and no standardised curriculum in place. While most schools already had PE programs, the new policy enforces a more uniform approach, aligning with a physical literacy framework that requires students to engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily.

In response to concerns about student discomfort and social norms, schools must now provide alternative sports options or accommodations for those unable to participate in standard PE classes. This includes measures such as separate sections, privacy screens, or alternative physical activities for students uncomfortable with mixed-gender classes.

The move seeks to address long-standing issues where many students, particularly girls, opted out of PE due to discomfort, leading to concerns about the impact on their health and well-being. A loophole that previously allowed students to skip PE with a parental note has also been removed.

The new PE policy is part of a broader set of 39 regulations introduced by ADEK in September. Schools will be required to comply with the policy by September 2026, with fines imposed for non-compliance.
