Could Saudi Arabia Build a River That’s Longer Than the Nile?

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has announced plans to build the world’s largest potable water project, a ‘river’ that plunges four meters deep, 11 meters wide and sprawls along 12,000 kilometers, which would make it longer than the Nile!

The underground river project will provide fresh water to Saudi homes, even in the kingdom’s desert regions. The water pipes in Saudi cities are already 126,000 kilometers long, and the new project will be twice the length of the Nile river. Using anti-corrosion pipes with a diameter of 2.25 meters, the project is set to become one of the world’s largest desalinated water transport networks.

Saudi Arabia is already the largest producer of desalinated water globally, producing over one billion and six million cubic meters of water every year. The Saline Water Conversion Corporation, a government-run entity, is the largest producer of desalinated water in the world, generating a total of (1006.6) million cubic meters annually. However, this new project will further anchor Saudi Arabia’s position as a global leader in the production of desalinated water.
