Madinah Wins 2025 Shanghai Award for Sustainable Development
Led by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme and Shanghai Municipality the award recognises cities advancing the 2030 Agenda and the New Urban Agenda.
Madinah has been named one of five global winners of the 2025 Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities also known as the Shanghai Award alongside Algiers Bogotá Espoo and Incheon.
The Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities is a joint initiative of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government. It recognises municipalities for progress in implementing the 2030 Agenda and the New Urban Agenda and serves as a platform for cities to exchange experience and learn from one another.
The 2025 cohort highlights city-level delivery on sustainable urban development priorities across different regions. The award is in its third cycle with winners selected through an international process overseen by the organisers. Submissions for the 2025 cycle closed on June 27th, 2025 as part of the programme’s regular calendar.
