Egyptian film directors and producers are rapidly becoming a force to be reckoned with on the international cinematic stage, winning a slew of prestigious awards and shining a spotlight on the often overlooked talent in the Middle East. Now, in a first for the region, Egyptian production house Filmedia collaborated with Universal Pictures to produce the prologue for ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’, the latest installment of the famous blockbuster series about rampaging dinosaurs and scientists who should really know better by now.

Led by Egyptian Cinematographer Ahmed Kardous, the all-Egyptian production team spent a month filming in the desolate deserts of the remote island town of Socotra, Yemen to oversee the filming of the first five minutes of the dinosaur thriller. Ahmed Kardous served as the Second Unit Director alongside industry veterans Colin Trevorrow and John Schawrtzman.

At first, Kardous was in disbelief that he would be part of the massive blockbuster film. “It started with an email from Arcadia Pictures in the UK requesting us to conduct scouting in Socotra in Yemen,” Kardous tells CairoScene. “We went to England to finalise the procedures and they took us to a room with walls plastered with maps and documents. We were a bit intimidated to be honest. Then in walks renowned American producer Colin Trevorrow! He was the one to break the news to us that we would be producing part of the third installment of the Jurassic Park saga.”

Filmedia Production House was founded by brother duo Ahmed and Hani Kardous in Egypt before branching out to Dubai to work on some major regional and international projects. The brothers have worked on a number of Egyptian movies and shows including ‘122 Movie’ and ‘May’s Kitchen’. They’ve also produced works for the Discovery Channel, Holland-based ‘The Pilgrims’ Code’ and Google Apps.
