Ismailia Int Film Festival Opens with 'Fiancees' By Julia Bünter
Swiss director Julia Bünter’s ‘Fiancées’ has been unveiled as the opening film for the anticipated 22nd edition of the Ismailia International Film Festival for Documentaries and Shorts.
Painting a picture of Cairo’s modern society, Swiss director Julia Bünter’s ‘Fiancées’ has been unveiled as the opening film for the anticipated 22nd edition of the Ismailia International Film Festival for Documentaries and Shorts. Following the marriage of three Egyptian women - Batool, Marize and Randa - Bünter’s documentary delves deep into the minutiae of cultural traditions that shroud this social institution.
‘Fiancées’ uses marriage as a pretext to talk about men and women, as well as the social pressures today’s generation encounters in the face of entrenched tradition and cultural norms.
Organized by the Ministry of Culture’s National Cinema Centre, the Ismailia International Film Festival for Documentaries and Shorts is the first Arab festival of its kind, and has been taking place annually since 1991. It will be headed by prominent critic Essam Zakaria for the fourth successive year. Under the guidance of writer Mohamed El-Basousy, the festival has selected ten feature films and 14 short documentaries to be judged by internationally acclaimed critics and filmmakers.
The film festival will take place in Ismailia from June 16th to June 22nd.
