Built on the ruins of two churches, Saint Catherine’s Cathedral is one of Alexandria’s most classical landmarks. Once you step inside, you’ll be captivated by the 19th century European oil paintings, sculptures, murals, and stained glass that adorn its walls, expressing the spiritual power that resonates within the church.
First built in 1856 in the Neo-Baroque style, Saint Catherine’s Cathedral served as a touchstone for Franciscans, particularly those who passed through Alexandria during their pilgrimage to the Holy Land. The cathedral was named after Catherine of Alexandria, who was martyred in the 4th century by the Roman emperor Maxentius. Around 1928, Italian architect Mario Avena added a new facade after the Roman Baroque style.
The cathedral served as the burial site of exiled Italian King Victor Emmanuel III when he passed away in 1947, until it was repatriated to Italy in 2017.
